Description and Adaptation

Male Narwhals have many black spots on its back while female Narwhals have black spots on its side and back. Males have long tusks which can be as long as 9 ft and weigh 22 lb. Narwhals flippers are short and wide and have a short circular head like a beluga. Another similarity with the beluga is that both beluga and narwhal have no dorsal fin. Male narwhals weigh 1,600 kg and are as long as 4.7 m while female narwhals weigh 1,000 kg and the length of them is 4.2 m.

Habitats, Landforms and Climate

Narwhals are common in deep water places, (lots of bays and basins). Narwhals are most common in the Arctic Ocean and in winter they break a path through the ice so they can travel to different places. The landforms in the Arctic region is lots of bare tundra and ice (not many trees). The climate in the Arctic region are cold long winters and short cool summers.

Relationships with Other Species

The Narwhal is a carnivore eating lots of seafood such as Arctic cod, shrimp and squid. Narwhals do not use their tusks to tear into food, they just swallow their food whole. Amazingly, they can have dives for as long as 20 minutes without even breathing.
